How to Use White with Channel Letters

Semion Barbershop Channel Letter Sign

Is your client considering white faces for their channel letter sign? White has many advantages as a color but also some limitations. Here are a few items to consider.

White is associated with light, innocence and purity. It is sometimes known as the “color of perfection.” Doctors wear white jackets for the association with these properties.

White has the highest level of light reflectancy level of any color and can be particularly strong when placed on a façade with which it has clear contrast.

Here are the “color contrast lists.”

White has excellent day contrast (and will be clearly visible) against these façade colors:

1. Red

2. Blue

3. Green

4. Brown

5. Black

White letters will not have strong day contrast on these façade colors:

1. Yellow

2. Orange

3. Beige

The two most popular white acrylic shades are standard white (#7328) and milky white (#2447.) For night visibility, standard white is highly reflective and will have a bright appearance when illuminated by LED that is a minimum of 6500 Kelvin.

Milky white (#2447) has the advantage of being more translucent than standard white but is slightly less reflective. It will also have an excellent night presence when illuminated with 6500 Kelvin (or greater) LED.
