Raceway Mounted Channel Letters: A Sign Shop’s Guide

When the whistle blows this summer, how many players take the field?

Quick — no looking it up. If you had to think about it, you’re in good company. The whole country’s about to watch a lot of soccer and only half-know the rules.

Here’s something we know cold: the raceway. It’s the industry’s favorite way to mount channel letters — the workhorse behind storefronts, strip centers, and multi-tenant interior malls everywhere. Want the full breakdown of what it is, when to use it, and how it’s built?

But the tournament’s started. We’re gearing up for watch parties and discovered a few similarities between the raceway and the beautiful game of soccer. 

And stick with us to the final whistle at the end of this read — you’ll build your own raceway before we’re done. No ruler, no metal brake, just your hands.

The player nobody watches. Of those eleven, the strikers up top get the cameras — the goals, the glory, the name on the jersey. The back line behind them, doing the unglamorous work so the strikers can shine? Nobody chants for them.

That’s the raceway. The letters are your strikers. The raceway is the back line — carrying the load, holding the whole thing true. You don’t notice it when it’s done right. That’s the point.

Only one player can use their hands. The goalkeeper. Everybody else plays it off the feet, the chest, the head — but the keeper’s the lone specialist allowed to reach out and grab the ball. The whole defense is built around that one job.

The raceway plays keeper. It’s the one part of the sign that handles the electrical — the power supply, the wiring, the connection all live inside it, tucked away and protected, so the letters out front never have to. One specialist, doing the job nobody else can.

You can’t just keep swapping players. This trips up everybody used to hockey or basketball. You get five substitutions — and only across three windows the whole match. Once a starter’s off, that call’s made. (This summer they even added a rule: a sub has ten seconds to clear the field or you play a man short.)

Your raceway works the same way: the calls you make before kickoff are the ones you live with. Color especially — a raceway usually blends to the building, not the brand, so it disappears into the wall instead of fighting it. That’s decided before we build, not after. Asking costs minutes. Guessing is expensive.

The tournament: It’s not best-of-anything. No best-of-seven like the NBA. Once the knockouts start, it’s single elimination — one match, lose and you’re out, no replay. One shot.

That’s install day. There’s no game two. So we mount your letters and logo to the raceway in-house — double hanger bars, standard now — and your crew hangs one clean unit instead of leveling a pile of letters on a lift. Easier day for them, a happy customer when it lights up. Fewer surprises all around.

Nothing on the pitch is a round number. The goal is exactly eight feet tall. The penalty spot sits exactly twelve yards out. Every measurement is regulated, because the game falls apart if it isn’t.

Same with the raceway. Five inches deep isn’t a number we rounded to — it’s the math of doing it right. The power supply runs about three and a half inches, and it sits on a mounting plate so standing water never reaches it. That’s already about four inches. Add the room the wiring needs to run, and you’re at five. Five inches is what it takes to mount the power supply the way UL wants to see it, keep the wiring clean, and keep the sign lit for years.

Now, you’re ready for the watch party. That’s it — you’re set for the summer. You can count the eleven, explain why only the keeper gets to use their hands, call the five-sub limit, and tell the table why a knockout match is win-or-go-home. Pour something cold and enjoy it.

Cheer for whoever you want. The striker who buries the winner in stoppage time, or the defender who made sure it never came down to that. Both win the match. Both earn the chant. And the next time a raceway lands on your desk, you’ll see it the same way — the quiet one carrying the whole front line, doing the work nobody films. Give it its due.
